7 Things you never knew about snoring.
1) SNORING RUINS SEX LIVES
A quarter of couples claim that snoring is ruining their sex lives, according to a study of cohabiting couples. According to the survey, a massive 80% of couples resorted to sleeping separately to escape the noise. Four out of 10 couples said they thought that snoring had adversely affected the quality of their relationship. “If a couple is getting to the stage when they are sleeping in different rooms then it's time that they start talking to each other very seriously." And 10% of couples said the problem had got so bad that they had even considered splitting up to escape the nightly drone. – BBC
2) SNORING LEADS TO OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA (OSA)
We studied the snorers in an adult population in Singapore and then went on to see how many snorers suffer pathological apnea and sleep apnea syndrome. 87.5% of loud habitual snorers had significant obstructive apneas on the polysomnogram and 72% of these apneics complained of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS). We guess that sleep apnea syndrome affects about 15% of the population. Contrary to what was believed, OSA occurred predominantly in stage 1 and 2 non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep rather than in REM sleep. The frequent arousals prevented sleep going beyond stage 1 and 2. – Prof. K. Goh
3) SNORING IS A RISK FACTOR FOR CHRONIC HEADACHE
Frequent headache is associated with a variety of sleep disorders. It was compared the prevalence of snoring in a group of chronic daily headache. Habitual snoring was more common in the CDH subjects. – Dr. Scher
4) SNORING LEADS TO HIGHER RISK OF DEVELOPING HIGH BLOOOD PRESSURE
For example, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with higher risks of cardiovascular disease such as heart attacks and strokes. This association is thought to exist because of higher prevalence of high blood pressure (hypertension) in individuals with obstructive sleep apnea. On the other hand, studies have shown that people with primary snoring did not have higher rates of elevated blood pressure compared to the general public.
5) GAINING WEIGHT LEADS TO SNORING
The more fat you have in your neck; it makes your neck larger on the outside. But it also presses inward and makes your airway smaller on the inside. More importantly, the fat is actually deposited in the tissues of the throat, so your palate may be longer, the roof of the mouth, that's the palate. Your uvula may become larger. Your tongue may become larger because of fat being deposited within those structures. These are specific areas that cause snoring.
6) SNORER HAVE HIGHER RISK OF GETTING STROKES
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with higher risks of cardiovascular disease such as heart attacks and strokes. This association is thought to exist because of higher prevalence of high blood pressure (hypertension) in individuals with obstructive sleep apnea.
7) AGING LEADS TO SNORING
The root cause of snoring is vibration of the tissues while breathing. Aging can lead to enhanced relaxation of muscles during sleep. As the muscles of the palate, tongue, neck, and pharynx relax more, the airway collapses more. This leads to a smaller airway and greater tissue vibration. Some medications encourage a deeper level of sleep, which also can worsen snoring.
